Features of paper-cut lanterns
Paper-cutting is one of the most popular folk arts in China, especially in the Northeast, where every household has to put up paper-cutting during the Spring Festival. Today, paper-cuts are more used for decoration, so Cantonese people might as well borrow them for use. Paper-cuts can be used to embellish walls, doors and windows, pillars, mirrors, etc., and can also be used to embellish lanterns. There are generally two ways to cut paper lanterns: scissors cut and knife cut. Scissors cutting is with the help of scissors. After cutting, a few (generally no more than 8) paper-cuts are pasted together, and finally sharp scissors are used to process the pattern. Knives and scissors are first folded into several stacks of paper, placed on a soft mixture of ash and animal fat, and then slowly carved with a knife. Paper-cut artists generally hold the knife vertically and process the paper into the desired pattern according to a certain model. Compared with scissors, one advantage of knife scissors is that they can be processed into multiple paper-cut patterns at one time. There are three common types of paper-cut lanterns on the Lantern Festival: one is pattern-based. For example, cutting the five grains and bees and attaching the lanterns represents "Feng Deng (light)"; cutting the magpie plum blossoms to decorate the lamp, called "Magpie Deng (light) plum"; . The other category is text-based. This is more consistent with the text in the calligraphy on the lantern mentioned earlier. Then there is the integration of the pattern and the text. The combination of the image thinking of the pattern and the rational thinking of the text will naturally become a unique landscape in the Lantern Festival home.
